A Seminole man is in jail, charged with first degree murder and aggravated child abuse in the death of his girlfriend’s 4-year-old boy.
Marton Sandor Pal, 21 years, confessed to punching the toddler, Evan Watkins, in his stomach, one week before he died.
Lakeland police said, Evan was rushed to the Lakeland Hospital on September 30, with a temperature of 104.7 degrees, just before 2:00 p.m., and was pronounced dead at 2:50 pm. An autopsy performed ruled that the toddler’s death was a homicide and that his death was as a result of blunt force abdominal trauma.
Police said, Evan’s daycare had reported suspicious bruising and scratching of the toddler’s face to the Florida Department of Children and Families, on September 13. But, a Lakeland police detective who attended a meeting convened by the Child Protection Team on September 14, determined there was no apparent evidence available to support a criminal charge at that time.
The investigation revealed that Evan’s mother, Susan Soligny of Lakeland, had frequently left Pal, her boyfriend, to babysit the child. Police learned that Evan was in Pal’s care on the days preceeding the bruising incident. Pal initially told investigators that the child had accidentally fallen at the Banana Lake Park on September 8th.
Police formally interviewed Pal on October 5, during which he admitted to punching Evan in the abdominal area. He admitted to striking Evan over a period of time, police said.
Pal was arrested on October 5, and charged with first degree premeditated murder and aggravated child abuse. He was booked into the Polk County Jail, without bond.
