Man Charged with Attempted Murder in Pleasant Hill School Shooting

Osceola County deputies arrested a man and charged him with attempted murder and domestic aggravated battery of his ex-wife.

John L. Maya, 44, of Kissimmee, was taken into custody, after deputies said, he shot his ex-wife at the Pleasant Hill Elementary School.

Investigators said, the shooting occurred around 5:00 p.m. on Monday.

Deputies recovered a hangun at the scene, after responding to a disturbance call at the school. Maya was arrested shortly thereafter.

Maya’s ex-wife, who had been shot, was flown to Orlando Regional Medical Center. The extent of her injuries are unknown.

The shooting incident occurred in the back parking lot and children in the extended day program, were not involved in the incident.

Investigators believe that the shooting incident was an isolated one and came about as a result of a domestic dispute between Maya and his ex-wife.

School officials said, the Districts Crisis Team were on the school campus on Tuesday morning, to provide assistance to parents or faculty.

The investigation is on-going and additional charges are pending.
