Senator Dan Gelber, the Democratic candidate running to become the next Attorney General of Florida, believes that everyday Floridians have not had a “true champion” fighting for them. He says Tallahassee is overrun with special interests and those who advocate for the wealthy. Gelber was responding to a question as to why Floridians should support him in the upcoming November elections, in an exclusive interview with West Orlando News Online (WONO).

Sen. Dan Gelber, Democratic candidate for Florida Attorney General

“Floridians have not had a true champion in Tallahassee who is going to wake up every day and look out for them and only them”, Gelber said. “The place has been overrun by special interests and people who basically speak for and advocate for the wealthiest and not the everyman and every woman.”

Gelber added:

“I am running for this office because I want to give everyday Floridians the champion that they deserve in a State that has deep challenges. I hope they hear me and see me and they will find that my words are authentic, because they are.”

Gelber also discussed other issues with WONO, including his proposal to establish a public corruption unit aimed at beating back government corruption in the state; the growing cottage industry of fraud, including mortgage and healthcare fraud and the increasing scourge of gang and gang violence in Florida.

Orange County Commissioner Fred Brummer is confident that, while the near-term prospects for attracting new development in Pine Hills are challenging, the work of the Pine Hills Redevelopment Task Force and the recent messaging, positively projecting the area, are essential. Brummer made these observations recently in an exclusive interview last Friday with West Orlando News Online.

Orange County Commissioner Fred Brummer--District 2

“…The near-term prospects are very challenging given the overall economic environment in general. For the long-term, I sincerely believe that the Pine Hills Redevelopment Task Force and the message, Pine Hills is on the Rise, is a great message to be getting out there and I think that we have a tremendous amount of opportunity,” Brummer said.

Brummer, who is seeking re-election as Commissioner for District 2, added that he believes Orange County Commissioners understand the changes which must be undertaken to facilitate re-development of the Pine Hills area.

“Further, I believe my fellow commissioners recognize that, this type of effort being community-based, is the kind of thing where we will, as a commission, step up and make the commitments necessary to do the exceptional types of zoning and land-use changes necessary to facilitate redevelopment,” Brummer added. “But, it is a story of a journey of a-thousand miles which begins with a single step and a huge, giant stride was, creating the Pine Hills Redevelopment Task Force.”

Commissioner Tiffany Moore Russell (District 6) says the M/WBE Ordinance has been helpful for some minority and women-owned businesses, but given the poor state of the economy, larger companies are competing directly with M/WBEs by lowering costs and more often than not, wind up being awarded the contracts. The Orange County Commission made these observations recently, in an exclusive interview with the West Orlando News.

Commissioner Tiffany Moore Russell, (District 6)

“More minorities are getting opportunities, but given the tough economy, the argument is whether one goes with the more cost effective option or whether we look for diversity,” Moore Russell said. “Everyone is competing for the government’s money, and so it is making it harder for minority-owned businesses.”

Moore Russell, who is seeking re-election for a second term to the Board of Orange County Commissioners added:

“You have some companies that are low-balling, offering cheaper rates so that they can be awarded the contract. That hurts our minority-owned businesses because, many of them cannot reduce costs, in view of their small size. So, when you have a three or five-member firm competing against a 50-member firm, it makes it very difficult for the minority company.”

Senator Dave Aronberg (District 27), one of the candidates in the race for Florida Attorney General will make Medicaid fraud one of his top priorities if elected to that office. Aronberg was responding to a question in an exclusive interview recently with West Orlando News regarding the billions of dollars which the state loses annually, on account of Medicaid fraud.

“Medicaid fraud will be one of my top priorities. We are going to fund it properly,” Aronberg said. “I am going to shift things around the office to make sure that we have more attorneys and more investigators in the Medicaid Fraud Division because, we know where the Medicaid fraud is; we just haven’t had the political will to make it a top priority. That is going to change because, not only does the state lose when it comes to siphoning off precious aid dollars when there is fraud, but when we don’t go after the fraud, we also leave Federal dollars on the table.”

Aronberg added that the current Attorney General, Bill McCollum has a different set of priorities.

“When I first came into office in 2003, a lot of people would say that Downtown Orlando was blighted, when in fact it was one major block at Church Street and Orange Avenue,” Dyer said. “We have been able to transform that block which was the catalyst for so many other things that are happening in our Downtown.
