Florida Universities get Millions for BP Gulf Spill Research
The University of South Florida’s College of Marine Science, Florida State University, the University of West Florida and the University of Miami were awarded millions of dollars to help study the impacts of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

One year after the Gulf Coast Claims Facility (GCCF) was established to compensate individuals and businesses affected by the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, on Tuesday, the agency said, it has largely succeeded.
BP Offers $1 Billion for Clean Up
With many unaddressed issues and thousands still suffering from the effects of the BP oil drill disaster one year ago, under an agreement announced Thursday, the oil giant will send $1 billion to the federal government and five Gulf coast states to help restore habitat damaged by the Deepwater Horizon spill. Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas will receive $100 million each. The remaining $500 million will be divvied up between the states by federal agencies also involved in cleanup efforts.

One year after the BP spill dumped 206 million gallons of oil into the Gulf, a special investigation report released today by the NAACP finds that, thousands of Gulf residents have not been “made whole” and many are still suffering mental health problems which range from mild to severe. The investigation’s findings reveal that financial woes for some have reached a critical juncture with loss of livelihoods resulting in foreclosures, evictions, seizure of other property, loss of insurance, as well as many formerly independent persons have become reliant on public benefits such as food stamps.
Scott Sides with Transocean, Won’t Join Fed Lawsuit
On Tuesday, Scott announced that the state won’t join a federal lawsuit against Deepwater Horizon oil rig owner Transocean. The state would continue to work with BP in an effort to be made whole, Scott said.
Feds Sue BP, Eight Others over Oil Spill
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced Wednesday that the government had filed suit against BP and eight other defendants, seeking to recover damages resulting from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill in April earlier this year. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in New Orleans, alleges that BP and contractors failed to take precautions to prevent the April 20 rig explosion that caused the largest oil spill in U.S. history, failed to monitor the well’s conditions and to use proper equipment and materials.
Gulf Task Force Begins 11-Month Odyssey
EPA Secretary Lisa Jackson called on the federal task force on Monday to go beyond its immediate mandate of looking at the ecosystem damage caused by the Gulf oil spill and explore environmental problems to the Gulf system prior to the disaster. Jackson was speaking to members of the Gulf Ecosystem Restoration Task Force at its first meeting in Pensacola.

BP announced on Sunday that its ruptured well in the Gulf has at last been sealed, bringing to a close the five-month struggle of the company and the Obama administration to control and permanently plug the nightmare well that killed 11 workers and caused the worst oil spill in the history of the United States.
BP Oil Spill Leaves Miles of Thick Oil on Gulf Sea Floor
Scientists conducting research in the Gulf have found a thick layer of oily sediment on the ocean floor stretching for miles. It is not the first time that oil has been found on the sea floor. Last month, scientists from the University of South Florida, using UV lighting detected oil spread across the sediment on the bottom of the Gulf.
Gulf Czar Speedy Claims Process Falls Short
Kenneth Feinberg, appointed by President Obama to handle damage claims arising from the Gulf oil spill, is unable to keep his commitment to cut down the response time from BP’s widely criticized system, to two days for individuals and seven days for businesses that file fully documented claims.
