Close to 800 people are set to lose their jobs at the University of Miami medical school, President Donna Shalala said during a meeting at the Miami Herald, yesterday.

State budget cuts, less research money, lower compensation from insurers and cutbacks in payments by Jackson Health System are causing the layoffs  Shalala said.

Workers are expected to be notified this month, she said, the Miami Herald reported.

The UM cuts amount to 8 percent of the medical center’s 10,000 workforce.
