Office Depot to Move Jobs Overseas after County gives Huge Tax Breaks

It seems that Palm Bach County has just gotten screwed by a Fortune 500 company.

After the county gave huge tax breaks to Office Depot, including a 10-year property tax break of $650,000 annually and another $8.7 million from the State of Florida, in exchange for creating hundreds of new jobs, Office Depot is set to move jobs overseas to Guatemala, reports the Palm Beach Post.

True, Office Depot stuck to its commitment to retain 1,750 jobs at its headquarters. But part of the deal was that the company would also create 580 new jobs for all the many tax breaks it was receiving. A modified figure of 200 new jobs to be created by August 2014 was then agreed to after the recession hit.

So far, Office Depot has created 2 new jobs.

But, according to the Palm Beach Post, Office Depot just announced it has hired a French company to outsource 80 of its accounting jobs in Boca Raton to Guatemala and India.

So much for giving away tax breaks to encourage job creation in Florida!
