No.1 Tennis Star Serena Williams Fined $82,500
The world’s number one tennis star, Serena Williams was fined $82,500 and given two years probation for her foul-mouth tirade at the US Open last September, the Grand Slam Committee said today.
The Committee also said that if Williams should have another major offense at a grand slam in the next two years, she would be suspended from the US open in 2010, 2011 or 2012.
The previous highest fine meted out to a Grand Slam player was about $48,000.
Williams’ outburst was prompted by a foot fault call by a lines judge during her semi-final match and with which she disagreed. She subsequently lost the match to Kim Clijsters.
