‘Topping Off’ Ceremony Set for Amway Center

Construction on the new Amway Center in downtown Orlando meets a milestone as the placement of the final steel beam is recognized by the traditional “Topping Off” ceremony, which will be held on November 5 beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the construction site (corner of Church Street and Hughey).

OCSO Investigates Death of Floating Man

The Orange Country Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit is investigating the death of an unknown man who was found floating behind the Bravo Supermarket located at 5500 E. Colonial Drive.

Smash ‘n’ Grab Bags $15k in Cell Phones

On October 23rd, three burglars robbed a Boost Mobile facility on N. Orange Blossom Trail stealing a quantity of mobile phones. Specifically, some 30 boxes of Motorola i425 mobile phones were stolen and 7 boxes of Motorola i465 phones, among others.

Over 1 Million Jobs Saved, But Millions Still Jobless

The Obama Administration announced today that some 640,329 direct jobs have been created with Stimulus Funds and that this amounted to over 1 million jobs being saved or created. But this is cold comfort to the millions of Americans that are out of work and the many more that will lose their jobs in the coming months.

Arrest Made in Orlando Double Homicide

Orlando Police Department-Homicide Unit has made an arrest in the double homicide which took place on October 15th at 533 W. Anderson Street. Kary Joseph Russell is currently in the Orange County Jail on unrelated charges.

Lakeland Among 10 Worst Dropout Cities Nationwide

A just released Census analysis by The Daily Beast puts Lakeland in Winter Haven, Florida, on the list of 10 worst dropout cities. Lakeland joins company with other cities on the list which include, Stockton, California; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Fresno, California; and Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Woman, 19, Riding Motorcycle Dies After Crashing

Early this morning, Tamara Deshaun Newell, 19 years old, of Drexel Avenue, Orlando, died following her injuries in a vehicular crash. Newell who was riding a motorcycle was traveling westbound in the 4900 block of W. Oakridge Road in the inside left turn lane onto Millenia Boulvard.

OCPS Names 5 Finalists

Orange County Public Schools has selected five employees as finalists for the 2010 Support Person of the Year. The winner will be announced during the OCPS Support Person of the Year Awards Ceremony on January 28, 2010 at the Rosen Centre Hotel.

JetBlue Jets to Second Jamaican Destination

JetBlue Airways today begins new service to Kingston, Jamaica, with one way fares as from New York to the island’s capital city, as low as $89. The airline will serve Kingston’s Norman Manley International Airport with daily nonstop service to/from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

Tot Mom to Debut in Australia

The play “Tot Mom” will come to life at the Sydney Theatre Company in Australia on December 18th. Under Director, Steven Soderbergh, a compelling drama, which is still unfolding in real life in Florida, will explore the issues associated with the murder of Tot Mom’s two-year-old daughter Caylee.
