Crist, Seminoles Sign Gambling Compact

Gov. Charlie Crist has signed a long-awaited pact between the state and the Seminole Tribe of Florida that allows certain types of gambling on tribal lands including its casinos in Coconut Creek and Hollywood.

Fla. Unemployment Borrowing May Top $1 Billion

Florida has become the 19th state to borrow money to keep unemployment benefits flowing after the trust fund ran dry. So far the state has borrowed $45 million, but officials estimate that it will have borrowed $1.2 billion by the end of the year.

A just released independent analysis of 911 in Florida finds, it is not a “system” at all, but rather a patchwork of state and local agencies, protocols, and technologies cobbled together to respond to 911 calls. L.A on Fire

A wild fire continues to burn out of control in northern Los Angeles and the growing inferno has already claimed the lives of two firemen. The wild fire which started last Wednesday, spread rapidly on Sunday, burning more than one dozen homes and threatening some 12,500 more. Firefighters worked alongside residents who are doing everything to make sure that more houses do not go up in flames.

Rattlers Prepare For Opening Week

The Florida A&M University Rattlers football team had a busy weekend preparing for their season opener on Sept. 5 against MEAC foe Delaware State University. The Rattlers held a final scrimmage in Bragg Memorial Stadium on Saturday. The scrimmage was in fact a dress rehearsal; complete with fans, referees, the Marching 100 and an announcer.
