Orange County Teacher In State Finals

All eyes are on Melissa Reiker.

Ms. Reiker is an Apopka High School teacher and state finalist for the 2010 Macy’s/Florida Department of Education Teacher of the Year. The winner will be announced Thursday, July 9, 2009 at Hard Rock Live at Universal CityWalk Orlando.

The winner serves one year as Florida’s Christa McAuliffe Ambassador for Education, spreading the word about educational opportunities and challenges in the Sunshine State. This is the third consecutive year in which Orange County Public Schools has been represented in the state finals for the Macy’s/Florida Department of Education Teacher of the Year.

Last year, Jennifer Bohn from Evans High School was a finalist and in the previous year, Richard Ellenburg of Camelot Elementary School, won the 2008 Macy’s/Florida Department of Education Teacher of the Year title.

Melissa Reiker has worked for OCPS for five years. She has taught regular and Honors language arts classes, English IV, AP literature and journalism at Apopka High.  District 7 School Board Member Christine Moore, Superintendent Ronald Blocker and North Area Superintendent Cathy Pope will be among the attendees for the ceremony.
