President Barack Obama pointedly singled out House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for kudos Tuesday and thus gave his political support to the embattled San Francisco Democrat in the midst of the waterboarding controversy.

The president used a sun-soaked Rose Garden ceremony announcing tighter auto mileage standards to heap praise on Pelosi. She has ”just been cracking the whip and, you know, making Congress so productive over these last several days. We are grateful for her,” Obama said.

Meanwhile, another top Democrat said the Central Intelligence Agency’s timeline about congressional torture briefings contained a factual error. The briefings are at the heart of the controversy over whether the CIA had told Pelosi that suspected terrorists were being subjected to waterboarding and she did not object.
