Floridians spend over 10% of income on health care

A just-released study conducted by Families USA, has found that over 4 million Floridians spend in excess of 10 percent of their income on health care. The report also says that, the number of Floridians who spend more than a tenth of their family income on health care, increased from 2.4 million in 2000 to 4.1 million in 2009.

Orange County gets Greener, and could add Jobs

A preliminary deal has been signed by a solar-equipment manufacturer and a local development company, to build a plant and headquarters near Orlando. While the arrangement has not yet been finalized, Willard & Kelsey Solar Group are negotiating incentives from the state and central government regarding the facility. Once finalized, the plant and its headquarters could bring 3,600 jobs to Orange County.

U.S. has first death from Swine Flu

U.S. health authorities have confirmed the first death from the H1N1 Virus, more popularly known as Swine Flu, on Wednesday, in Texas. The victim is a 23-month old tot. President Obama in an early morning new conference urged local authorities to be vigilant in reporting new suspected cased. He also said that schools should consider closing temporarily, if it was confirmed that the virus was present among its student population.

Jamaica police battle Tax protesters

Jamaica police and soldiers spent Tuesday battling protesters and clearing roadblocks in Kingston and St. Catherine. Jamaicans are protesting the new tax package and in particular, the $8.75 tax on each litre of gasoline. According to a police spokesman, those persons arrested during the protests have been charged with destruction of property and obstruction of traffic, among others.

South Africans are grappling with political independence for blacks who control less than 10% of the economy. That explains in part why voters chose to vote for “Lethu Mshini Wami” (Bring Me My Machine Gun.) To them; the struggle is far from over.

Grayson: Budget not perfect, but I support it

Congressman Alan Grayson proudly voted in favor of the Budget Resolution Report this morning. Congressman Grayson said that, “My goals are to create and save jobs, meet human needs, and protect taxpayer money. This budget promotes those priorities. It creates a blueprint for our return to economic strength and I support it.”

100 Days of Obama

Wednesday marks the first 100 days of Barack Obama as President. Obama has implemented a number of initiatives for women and families since taking office, including restoring women’s legal rights to sue their employers for pay discrimination, ending the ‘gobal gag rule’, and saved and created jobs through the stimulus package in fields where the majority of workers are women.

Study: Black journalists lose newsroom jobs at alarming rate

Newsroom jobs held by black journalists were cut by an alarming 13.5 percent in 2008, making African-Americans the single most targeted group for job losses in newsrooms across the country according to a study released by ASNE, the American Society of News Editors. According to the National Association of Black Journalists, President Barbara Ciara, “While NABJ recognizes the current economic downturn, newspapers must stop the bloodletting of black journalists now. ”

Consumers say Practical Technology will improve Future

According to The Harris Poll of 2,355 U.S. adults surveyed online in March, a majority of consumers believe advanced technology could be the answer to many of the challenges the U.S. faces today, whether it is a stalled automobile industry, an ailing education system or expensive medical costs.
