Orange County Health Officer: “Folks, It’s Already Here”

Orange County Health Officer, Dr. Kevin Sherin said Thursday morning that he believes Influenza AH1N1, better known as swine flu is in Central Florida. “I can’t confirm that with a laboratory test right now, but I’m telling you it’s here in our community and it can spread. Anyone who is sick must be treated, Dr. Sherin said.

Swine flu in Florida, 20 cases suspected in Miami-Dade, Broward

Health officials, Wednesday, said that there are possibly 20 Swine flu cases in Miami-Dade County, but more testing needs to be done. Broward county also has an unspecified number. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization, Wednesday, raised the alert level to Phase 5, which suggest that the likelihood of a pandemic “is very high or inevitable.” Fear is growing that the H1N1 virus, better know as Swine flu, is already in Florida.

White House announces Fall Internship Program

The White House on Thursday, announced that applications for the Fall 2009 White House Internship Program are due by Tuesday, May 26. Those selected to participate in the program will gain valuable job experience and an inside look at the life of White House staff while building leadership skills.

FCRA to establish branch in Orange County

Recently, the Florida Civil Rights Association (FCRA) Leadership Team held a meeting in Orlando to discuss leadership training and the creation of a branch to address local issues and concerns of its members in Orange County. According to the FCRA, with the increase in membership and civil rights issues, establishment of a local branch would enhance the organization’s ability to address the needs of the Orange County community and allow the State Office to meet FCRA President’s 2009 agenda.

Free “Boot Camp for New Dads”

Babies don’t come with directions! So, the Orange County Health Department (OCHD) now has the free training every new dad needs. “Boot Camp for New Dads”, an educational program taught by fathers for fathers, will take place on Wednesday, May 6th at Winnie Palmer Hospital, 83 W. Miller Street, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Florida boy flies to Cali., parents, airlines crew up

Little 13-year old Kenton Weaver, a Florida boy, drove 30 miles to the Fort Lauderdale airport and flew to San Jose where his mother lives, and no one noticed. The boy was able to by pass his father, family members and airline officials. He was found at the ticket counter in the airport in California. The child’s parents say that he has a form of autism and is intrigued with planes.

Elizabeth Edwards: “I Cried and Screamed”

Elizabeth Edwards’ memoir, “Resilience” would hit the bookstores on May 12, But, the wife of presidential candidate John Edwards, would address her husband’s affair with videographer, Rielle Hunter, in the coming weeks. According to sources, Edwards writes, upon finding out about the affair, “I cried and screamed, I went to the bathroom and threw up.”

Florida moves to control narcotics

Florida moved a step closer to better monitoring prescription drugs when the House passed the pill mill bill on Thursday. Florida is only one of 12 states that does not have a prescription drug monitoring program. The legislation requires doctors and pharmacists to track people that use prescription narcotics.

Game 5: Magic beat Philadelphia 76ers

The Amway Arena hosted game 5 of the Eastern Conference quarter finals between the Orlando Magic and the Philadelphia 76ers. It was a sell out event, with over 17,000 in attendance largely celebrating the Magic 91 – 78 victory.

Floridians spend over 10% of income on health care

A just-released study conducted by Families USA, has found that over 4 million Floridians spend in excess of 10 percent of their income on health care. The report also says that, the number of Floridians who spend more than a tenth of their family income on health care, increased from 2.4 million in 2000 to 4.1 million in 2009.
