President Barack Obama departed today for the G-20 Summit in London at which he is expected to put forth positions and prescriptions on a range of issues, including the global economic crisis and the war in Afghanistan. While Obama remains hugely popular among Europeans, there is much skepticism among heads of state on his policies for stimulating the U.S. economy and winning the war in Afghanistan.

On the eve of the G-20 Summit, President Obama is urging that leaders unite in the face of the current global crisis. He stressed that, in view of the severe global contraction, all countries should take steps to promote economic growth and trade, adopting a robust approach to stimulating their economies, as the U.S. has done, and fighting protectionism.
Rick Wagoner, General Motors chief executive, has been asked by the White House to step aside in view of his failure to develop a plan to save the automaker. Although the government has already poured billions of dollars into GM and Chrysler, it is likely that additional support will be forthcoming, if certain conditions are met.
Obama and his economic team have proposed a new initiative to jump-start the economy and make borrowing easier for families and businesses. Many believe that the fundamental problem with the financial institutions is that their balance sheets are inundated with worthless and toxic assets. Is Obama and his economic advisors telling us the truth, when they try to sell us worthless and toxic assets?
Madonna must wait a little longer for the adoption of her second child from Malawi. A Malawian judge has postponed ruling on the matter until Friday. The pop star’s wealth and influence, some feel, will enable her to side step a Malawian law that requires an 18-24 month assessment period, prior to adoption.
