Gates to Cut Waste at Pentagon

Robert Gates has been a popular figure in Washington since he took over the Defense Department in 2006 from a discredited Donald Rumsfeld, essentially to salvage a stumbling war in Iraq. But the free pass may be about to come to an abrupt end. It will soon fall to Secretary Gates to make some unpopular choices – and probably step on some important toes – as his desire to reform a bloated Defense Department steeped in tradition, inertia, and bureaucracy collides with vested interests.

Lee Anthony Gets Real

Lee Anthony faced tough questioning at the law offices of Morgan and Morgan Friday, in the defamation suit filed against his sister, Casey Anthony. Lee said that he never met or seen Zenaida Gonzalez and that the first time he ever heard her name was in July when Casey mentioned her.

Reckless Drivers Dead on OBT

Two people were killed early Friday morning in a crash on North Orange Blossom Trail and Pepper Mill Road. Investigators said a black two-door Toyota Scion was crushed when it overturned several times and crashed into a white Toyota Corolla that was going the opposite direction.

Drunken Driver Smashes Car Into House, Lands In Jail

A driver crashed into a home on Orange Blossom Trail early Friday morning. Troopers said the driver, 33-year-old Lee Rutland of Orlando, crossed a median and crashed into the home. Rutland was arrested after he was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

Howard Pledges $25K To Hungry Kids, Equal to Half Hour Pay

On various Thursday afternoons throughout the current school year, volunteers from the Orlando Magic’s corporate office have arrived at Lake Como Elementary on the city’s south-side to fill more than 200 backpacks with an assortment of food. The Magic’s Dwight Howard pledged $25,000 of the DeVos Community Enrichment Award he received from the Rich and Helen DeVos Foundation for his efforts off the court.

Okaloosa County Sheriff to Be Arrested

Gov. Charlie Crist suspended Okaloosa County Sheriff Charles Morris on Friday, hours before the sheriff was to make an initial appearance in federal court in Las Vegas on corruption charges. Authorities said Morris, 59, will be returned to Florida where he faces similar charges along with his office manager, Teresa Adams, 50. Adams was expected to make her first appearance Friday before a U.S. magistrate in Pensacola, according to officials.

Russell Simmons To Pay Ex $40 G’s a Month

Court records show Russell Simmons has agreed to pay $40,000 a month in child support. That’s almost a half a million bucks a YEAR! An L.A. County Superior Court judge approved the deal yesterday which gives ex-model and Baby Phat clothing mogul Kimora Lee Simmons sole custody of the couple’s two daughters, 9-year-old Ming and 6-year-old Aoki.

Pimps Recruiting Teenaged Girls Online

One self-described pimp named Marvin Chavelle Epps recruited a 16-year-old girl on MySpace. Three weeks after they met on the social networking site, they were arrested together outside a cheap motel in Sacramento, 50 miles from the teen girl’s home. She was turning tricks. On her arm, a fresh tattoo showed bundles of cash and her new acquaintance’s street moniker in 72-point cursive.

Jack Tweed Pleads for More Time

Jade Goody’s husband Jack Tweed has made a plea for his prison curfew tag to be removed so he can spend as much time as possible with his bed-ridden wife before she dies. “She’s my wife and she needs me by her side,” he reportedly told his probation officers. Jack (21) is out on license after being given an 18-month jail sentence for attacking a teenager with a golf club, and has to return to his mother’s home – a 20 minute drive from his terminally ill wife – every evening.
