Still Talking About It: Hurricane Irma Relief Efforts

Florida Gov. Rick Scott, Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and local elected and community officials gather for a roundtable discussion of ongoing Hurricane Maria relief efforts at the relocated Multi-Agency Resource Disaster Relief Center.

Mayor Teresa Jacobs joined a roundtable discussion of ongoing relief efforts for Hurricane Maria evacuees held by Florida Gov. Rick Scott at the relocated Multi-Agency Resource Center (MARC) on Jan. 4.

To best serve Puerto Rican and U.S. Virgin Island families and storm victims affected by Hurricane Maria, theĀ Florida Division of Emergency Management, along with local, state and federal partners, haveĀ relocated the Multi-Agency Resource CenterĀ (MARC)Ā from the OrlandoĀ International Airport toĀ 6490 Hazeltine National Drive, Suite 170 Orlando, FL 32822.

Operating hours for this newĀ resource center locationĀ will be Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The newĀ MARCĀ location is on Lynx Bus Route 51, in close proximity to the Orlando International Airport. Ā LYNX bus schedules toĀ Orlando International AirportĀ may be accessedĀ on the LYNX websiteĀ and theĀ LYNX Trip PlannerĀ web portal.

ā€œOn behalf of Orange County Government, our continued thoughts and prayers are with our neighbors from the Islands, as well as the many Central Floridians with friends and family in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico,ā€ Mayor Jacobs said.Ā  ā€œI am thankful for the Governorā€™s leadership, including this roundtable meeting.Ā  Iā€™m also deeplyĀ appreciative of the efforts of Central Floridians. From local families to government, our school districts and non-profit organizations, itā€™s been heartwarming to see our collaborative, compassionate spirit in action, as we have rallied to aid those recovering from Hurricane Maria.ā€

In the wake of both Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria, and in keeping with Orange Countyā€™s culture of care and compassion, Orange County Government continues to support those who have been impacted by Hurricane Maria. Orange County and local residents continue to work collaboratively on relief and recovery efforts in partnership with FEMA, the State of Florida, and our many community and faith -based organizations.

Immediately following Hurricane Maria, Orange County launched a webpage, ā€œUnited We Can Do More.ā€ The webpage initially served to assist those searching for loved ones, when communication with the Island was extremely limited. The site now provides information about disaster resources, how local residents can participate in relief efforts, and special events that benefit the people of Puerto Rico. It continues to be updated.

On Jan. 3, Gov. ScottĀ sent a letter to the United States Senate AppropriationsĀ Committee urging the Senate to act immediately and pass a significant Hurricane Irma and Maria disaster relief package.
